When Adolf Hitler became the Leader of Germany one of his first tasks was to remake Berlin, the capital city of his new empire, in his own image. He hired his own personal architect, Albert Speer, to completely remake and refashion, rebuild and redevelop, almost every government building in Nazism’s crown jewel.
Like his predecessor, Donald Trump wants to do to his capital city, Washington DC, what Hitler did almost a century ago to Berlin. However, unlike Hitler who had complete mastery over his capital city, Trump will have to deal with a new mayor who is every bit the antithesis of everything he stands for.
Adolf Hitler never had to deal with any opposition, political or otherwise, when he sought to change his capital city exactly as he wanted. The Mayor of Berlin in 1933 was just another political servant of Germany’s leader.
Trump , however, will have to deal with a great deal more of opposition when it comes to his plans of doing a makeover in the nation’s capital entirely in his own image.
In a huge shock to Trump’s plans for DC, the winner of the Democratic primary for Mayor and almost certainly the next mayor with virtually no opposition from Republicans, will be not only a Democrat but regular proponent of the Democratic Socialists of America.
In comparable terms it would be as if the Mayor of Berlin while Hitler was the German Leader would have been a Communist.
Janeese Lewis George’s mayoral campaign was unlike any the nation’s capital had seen.
She built a strategy around organized labor, galvanizing union workers to knock on doors. Endorsed by the Democratic Socialists of America, Lewis George energized the city’s left. And she tailored her campaign to the age of social media, producing an Instagram video to accompany every major policy debate.
A self-described democratic socialist, Lewis George has campaigned on expanding access to childcare, reforming zoning and permitting laws to speed up the construction of homes and addressing the root causes of crime — particularly among young people.
She has also pledged to bar the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) from cooperating with federal immigration enforcement personnel. Interim MPD Chief Jeffery Carroll said in January his department is not working with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), but he noted D.C. officers work with other federal agencies that enforce immigration laws.
Lewis George joins Robert White Jr., who won the Democratic primary for the district’s delegate to Congress, as the top local officials who likely will contend with the federal government’s intentions for the city. They each campaigned on a promise to take a harder line than their predecessors against the Trump administration’s moves on the district, including its deployment of the National Guard on an ongoing, open-ended mission meant to fight crime.
She said she would oppose actions that threaten the city’s residents.
“We are not going to be able to stand up for our autonomy and fight for D.C. statehood ultimately, by just complying in advance,” Lewis George said. “I have also been very clear that I will work with anyone including the president for the best interest of D.C. residents.”
Donald Trump seems just as determined to undermine and sabotage her administration in every way he can. Prior to her primary victory, the president threatened a federal takeover of the district if Lewis George became the Democratic nominee. National Guard troops from multiple states have been in D.C. since August, in an effort by the Trump administration to crack down on crime.
Following her victory in the Democratic primary, Trump blasted Janeese Lewis George, the Democratic nominee for mayor of Washington, D.C., as a “communist” whose policies will harm the district.
“Janeese Lewis George, the Communist who is almost certainly going to be elected Mayor of Washington, D.C., has stated that she wants to empty the prisons, make D.C. a Sanctuary City, oppose ICE, welcome Criminal Illegal Aliens back into our beloved Capital, resist Anti-Crime Crackdowns, Defund the Police, continue and expand Cashless Bail, and so many other Capital destroying ‘things,’” the president said on social media.
Trump, who has also prioritized multiple projects intended to “beautify” the nation’s capital, said that Lewis George’s policies “will never work out” and he will not allow her to “even have a chance” because he has “worked too hard” on those endeavors. Trump added, “Many people, including myself, have worked long and hard to get it there, and we will not let it be destroyed by a Communist adherent who has no intention to, MAKE WASHINGTON GREAT AGAIN!”
Later the president called communism the “Greatest Threat to our Country since World War I, World War II, Pearl Harbor, or 9/11!”
