    Real Utopia-Left Forum ’08: Brian Dominick 11/11

    This Left Forum panel proposes vision for what a future participatory society may look like while exploring real world examples in the US, Asia and Latin America, and the strategy and activism needed to take us there. It is inspired by the book Real Utopia: Participatory Society for the 21st Century (AK Press, May 2008) edited by Chris Spannos.

    Brian Dominick has been organizing collectives in central New York and elsewhere for nearly fifteen years. He was co-founder of PeoplesNetWorks, the parecon organization that published The NewStandard from 2003 to 2007.

    Brian Dominick is an organizer and journalist who did most of his activist work based in Syracuse, NY, where he was born in 1973. Brian now lives in Brooklyn, New York.

    Brian was a co-founder with Jessica Azulay of The NewStandard, a hard-news publication that operated from 2004-2007. He and Jessica then founded WebRoot Solutions, an activist-oriented website design, development and hosting project, which Jessica still runs. Brian is now projects manager at Agaric.

    He has been an active participant in Z's online operations since 1994, when he attended the Z Media Institute. Brian has taught a variety of courses at ZMI in the years since.

    The Wind Cries Freedom, the new book from Z co-founder Michael Albert, is a sweeping oral history of a future American revolution.

    Through thirty interconnected chapters, it draws out the strategies, failures, turning points, and hard-won wisdom of a movement that called itself the Revolutionary Participatory Society. These are not the polished memoirs of politicians: they are the unfiltered accounts of people who organized in neighborhoods, hospitals, universities, stadiums, courthouses, and places of worship, and kept a shared vision alive through cynicism and exhaustion.

    The result is speculative political fiction that reads like history: messy, human, and quietly hopeful in the way that only real experience and long thought can produce.
