A real mensch if ever there was one.
Like most, politicians set a-fire the sceptical (at best) impulses that channel through my current affairs ears. Benn, unlike most politicans had only a whiff of it about him as much as the smoke of the blacksmith permeates his friend, not quite polluting him but still necessarily tinging his edges by proximity!
However, this mustiness was frequently overcome by Benn’s unwavering sense of fairness, justice and his courage to stand by such convictions. He was undaunted by the lack of political spotlight for himself, but perturbed when it was cast away from those issues that at heart involved people and their betterment.
It is sad that Tony did not receive the platform that his passion for people and fairness deserved, and that he has not, and maybe will never be recognised for the intellectual good sense he brought to British politics and for the rights of all to lead peaceful and fulfilling lives everywhere.
British (romantic?) socialism near its ideal best:
‘I think if you’re going to be committed to doing anything, you really have to care about it, and I suppose that is a romantic idea.’ – Tony Benn
A great loss . Pity more politicians don’t say it like it is – as he did . I saw a tribute on BBC a few nights ago – and some of his ” colleagues ” whom he despised eg Lord Kinnonck were trying to say he did things for self aggrandisement – this from a ” socialist ” now a Lord – as so many of the traitors are .
We need people like him now – not politicians who are basically employees of banks – and yet are paid for by taxpayer!!!! ——- as more and more rights are being taken from workers –
. Hopefully people wake up to this fact before it arrives on their doorstep .
