If you get yourĀ foreign policy newsĀ todayĀ from CNN or MSNBC or NPR or similar outlets, then youāreĀ bombardedĀ hourĀ afterĀ hourĀ with the idea that the United StatesĀ has theĀ absoluteĀ right toĀ imposeĀ sanctions onĀ country after country overseasĀ ifĀ they violate human rights orĀ are not democratic.
To give just one example: On Sunday,Ā CNNĀ anchor Dana BashĀ grilledĀ BidenĀ National Security AdviserĀ Jake SullivanĀ on why the White House is not imposingĀ yetĀ moreĀ sanctionsĀ on Russia (and China)Ā andĀ why Team Biden wasĀ āgiving inĀ toĀ Russiaā on the gas pipeline to Western Europe. Sullivan was emphatic in insistingĀ thatĀ sanctions had been imposedĀ andĀ more wereĀ on the way ā boasting that Biden had grabbed even more presidential power toĀ sanction Russia through an executive order.
Iām old enough to rememberĀ the superiority complex behind theĀ liberal media propaganda during the Cold War withĀ the SovietĀ Union ā while U.S. foreign policy, in the name of democracy, massacred millions of peopleĀ of color, mostly civilians,Ā across the globe . . .Ā from Asia toĀ Southern Africa to Latin America.
InĀ the middle of the Cold War,Ā when Martin Luther King Jr.Ā denouncedĀ the U.S. governmentĀ as āthe greatest purveyorĀ of violence in the world todayā andĀ criticized U.S. hubrisĀ fueling the Cold War,Ā liberalĀ outletsĀ like theĀ New York TimesĀ andĀ Washington PostĀ furiously condemnedĀ KingĀ ā in essence,Ā telling him to leave foreign policy toĀ āusĀ white guys.ā
When it came to relations between nations, KingĀ criticizedĀ theĀ āarroganceāĀ ofĀ our country and the WestĀ in āfeeling that it has everything to teach others and nothing to learn from them.ā
Jump toĀ the present, and you see the same arroganceĀ in liberalĀ U.S.Ā media: We haveĀ everything to teach othersĀ ā whether Russia or China or Iran or Venezuela or any of theĀ dozens of countries the U.S. is imposingĀ sanctions on, sometimes deadly sanctions.
Letās do today what MLKĀ urgedĀ us to do back then: look at ourselves in the mirror.
There is no more precious human right than the right to beĀ free from jail or prison.Ā SoĀ itās a human rights violationĀ of epic proportions that the UnitedĀ States has moreĀ than 2 million people incarcerated, wayĀ more than any other country, including China with its much huger population. Our people behind bars areĀ disproportionatelyĀ Black or Brown people. Liberal media have recently learned how toĀ throw around the termĀ āsystemicĀ racism,āĀ butĀ ā when lecturing other countriesĀ ā theyĀ deftlyĀ forget thatĀ mass incarcerationĀ is an affront toĀ notions of ādemocracyā and āhuman rights.ā
Itās a human right to be able toĀ live withoutĀ the fear ofĀ violence.Ā Yet no other major countryĀ has so much gun violence, with hundreds shot every dayĀ ā one of many problems that U.S. ādemocracyā canātĀ evenĀ address, let alone solve.
OneĀ mightĀ have hoped that recent U.S. history wouldĀ have humbled liberal media pundits about their cherishedĀ belief inĀ the USAĀ as a ābeacon of democracyā to the world ā and therefore, our sacred right to punish other countries that donāt measure up.
After four years of TrumpĀ and a Trump movement that has captured almost half the electorate . . .Ā after ourĀ corporatizedĀ media system lavished massive amounts of free airtime on candidate Trump in 2015 (CNN,Ā CBS,Ā ABC,Ā etc.) because it was good for network profits . . .Ā Ā afterĀ yearsĀ of aĀ dysfunctional political system in Washington thatĀ serves the richĀ and giant corporationsĀ when not in total gridlock . . .Ā after the Supreme Court got packed with right-wing judgesĀ through legislativeĀ double-dealing . . .Ā afterĀ ever-increasingĀ voter suppression targeting people of color and young voters . . . one would hope for some humilityĀ about āU.S. democracy.ā
YetĀ liberalĀ media punditsĀ keep propagandizing the publicĀ about theĀ USAāsĀ rightĀ toĀ lecture foreign countriesĀ overĀ their political systems, and to severely punish themĀ (leaving aside allies like Colombia, Saudi ArabiaĀ andĀ Israel, of course). Never mind the horrific consequences to civilians overseas when deprived of life-sustaining imports.
TheseĀ liberal newsĀ outlets mayĀ despiseĀ Trump, butĀ they sureĀ put āAmerica firstāĀ when it comes toĀ policing the rest of the world.Ā And they seem intent on instigating new Cold Wars with Russia and China.
Itās indefensible that Putin has imprisoned andĀ nearlyĀ killedĀ opposition figure Alexei Navalny, and itāsĀ importantĀ for the U.S.Ā governmentĀ to publicly and privately speak out against such behavior.Ā The same goes for ChinaāsĀ terribleĀ mistreatment of Uyghur Muslims. But while speaking outĀ withĀ self-awareness andĀ humilityĀ about human rights,Ā the U.S.Ā alsoĀ needs toĀ work collaboratively with RussiaĀ onĀ cyber-peace and disarmament (theĀ two nations have 90 percent ofĀ the worldāsĀ nuclear weapons) and with China on climate change. Without collaboration, the world is doomed.
The liberal view on theĀ originalĀ Cold War with Russia is that āWE WON.ā The progressive view is that everybody lost, especially Global South countries like Vietnam, Iran, Indonesia, Guatemala and El Salvador thatĀ were victimized by U.S. invasions,Ā coups andĀ proxy warsĀ supported by both Democrats and Republicans.
I have a bold ideaĀ you wonāt hear on CNN or MSNBC: InsteadĀ of lecturing and sanctioning the rest of the world, letās get our own house in order. Letās lead by example. On democracy, instead of sanctioning other countries,Ā Team Biden should rally Democrats toĀ sanction the U.S. Senate by establishing majority rule through an end toĀ thatĀ Jim Crow-legacy, theĀ filibuster.Ā And Biden shouldĀ addressĀ the right-wing-packedĀ Supreme Court.
On human rights, letās cut the U.S.Ā military budget in half,Ā andĀ provide things thatĀ other advanced countriesĀ alreadyĀ have:Ā universal healthcare and free orĀ near-freeĀ higher education.Ā LetāsĀ invest billions of dollars in poor and working-class communities, and end theĀ horrorsĀ of mass incarceration.Ā Letās cancel student debt thatĀ burdens 45 million people ā and,Ā at long last,Ā seriouslyĀ tax U.S. oligarchs and corporations to pay for these investments (and perhaps worry less about sanctioningĀ Russian oligarchs).
Joe Biden likes to think of himself as a foreign policy specialist. If he listens to theĀ laptop warriorsĀ in the mediaĀ who want him to āpivotā belligerently toward China and Russia,Ā an adventuristĀ foreign policy will undermine the Democratic domestic agenda and doom his administration quicker than you can sayĀ āLBJ.āĀ And Republicans will retakeĀ Congress.
Biden can succeed only if heĀ ignores the media hawks andĀ focuses laser-like on domestic policy ā galvanizing his party towardĀ a serious FDR-like effort toĀ address human rightsĀ and climate changeĀ withĀ major federal programs upliftingĀ working class peopleĀ of all colors.

Of course, Jeff is right. His perspective and proposals make perfect sense and would be the best way to enable the US to become what the best in us hopes to be, furthermore, the US could then become an example for the world. This is the influence the US should exert. Nevertheless, it’s doubtful that those who hold power would or will ever accede to such a plan. We seem destined to continue as a destructive and imperial force, to our own continued decline and suffering for most people.
