Did you ever think that investigation of the potential dangers of putting GMOs (genetically modified organisms) into food would be based on objective research? Or that unbiased reviews of research by academic journals would chart a steady march toward scientific truth? If so, you would be very wrong. Through all of its phases, scientific research is subject to repression, manipulation and more insidious forms of control that push it toward a profit-based consensus.
Suppression of GMO Research
Three well-known GMO studies form a pattern of authors’ being harassed, intimidated and even having their findings “retracted” or withdrawn by a scientific journal after being published.
Arpad Pusztai was a world authority in the important field of plant lectins at the Rowett Research Institute in Aberdeen, Scotland. (Plant lectins are proteins that bind to sugar molecules.) Beginning in 1995, Pusztai investigated a GM potato whose developers thought that it might be toxic to insects, nematodes and fungi without harming mammals. To his surprise, Pusztai found that rats that ate the GM potato had damage to their immune and digestive systems.
Alarmed that his findings could indicate dangers to humans, he tried to warn the Ministry of Agriculture. They did nothing. As his worries mounted, Pusztai obtained permission from the head of the Institute to broadcast his findings. They appeared on World Action Television in 1998. After intense corporate and political pressure, Pusztai was forcibly retired and denied access to his data. An enormous furor followed — Pusztai was exonerated, but not rehired, and his “findings were published in themedical journal, Lancet.”
A few years later, the hammer fell on Ignacio Chapela at the University of California, Berkeley. Along with his graduate student David Quist, Chapela demonstrated that GMO contamination was threatening the genetic diversity of Mexican maize. As Andy Rowell wrote:
Quist and Chapela reached two conclusions. The first was that GM contamination had occurred in Mexican maize and the second was that the GM DNA seemed to be randomly fragmented in the genome of the maize. If the first point was contentious, the second was explosive, as it suggested that transgenic DNA was not stable.
When their findings were published in Nature, the biotech industry and scientific establishment went to extraordinary lengths to discredit them. Nature danced around whether it would or would not retract the publication, though the findings were finally accepted. The University of California attempted to deny tenure to Chapela; but after a loud campaign, he received tenure in 2006.
Blatant suppression of GMO research has occurred most recently with Gilles-Eric Séralini, who found that feeding Monsanto’s GM corn to rats increased their development of tumors. The study appeared in Food and Chemical Toxicology, the same journal that routinely carries studies by Monsanto employees showing that GM corn is safe. The Séralini study was actually superior to those conducted by Monsanto’s research teams. First, Monsanto studies examined the effect of glyphosate (the active ingredient in Roundup) while Séralini examined rats fed Roundup itself. This is a critical distinction, since glyphosate could have synergistic effects when combined with other chemicals in Roundup.
Second, Monsanto rats were only studied for 90 days while Séralini examined rats for two years. There were several other differences between the lines of research, but none of them threatened the validity of Séralini’s findings. Nevertheless, corporate researchers demeaned and hurled insults at Séralini, demanding that the journal withdraw his study.
As Food and Chemical Toxicology gave into corporate pressure and retracted the Séralini article, it admitted that the study was neither fraudulent nor did it intentionally misrepresent the data. Its retraction was based on the claim that “the results presented (while not incorrect) are inconclusive . . .” This is an astounding statement since virtually every published research article has a “discussion” section wherein authors describe limitations of their findings and explain how further research could help clarify issues. If “inconclusive” results were the basis for retraction, then 99 to 100 percent of published research should be withdrawn.
This is in stark contrast to the open arms with which journals greet papers by corporate researchers. As Jill Richardson concludes in her review of the Séralini affair, “any time a study has at least one author with a professional tie to the biotech industry, you don’t even have to read the study to know the conclusion. It’s concluded that GE crops are A-okay.”
GMO Science Not Alone
While pure food advocates are justifiably outraged at the dismissal of serious investigations, please be aware that GMO research is not at all unique in being attacked. In September 1962, Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring exposed the havoc that pesticides had been wreaking on flora and fauna. Agrochemical apologists could barely contain the ridicule that they heaped on her.
Carson was hardly the only critic of pesticides to be dogged by industry. In 1997, Tyrone Hayes investigated how the herbicide atrazine feminizes male frogs by disrupting their endocrine system. He described how low-income people of color are exposed via farm work or urban ghettoes. When the US Environmental Protection Agency did literature reviews of atrazine toxicity in 2007 and 2012, it ignored Hayes’ findings. Sygenta, the Swiss manufacturer of atrazine, pursued Hayes so relentlessly that The New Yorker wrote that it “plotted ways to discredit him.” Sygenta’s campaign included press releases, letters to the editor, a formal ethics complaint filed at the University of California, Berkeley, attempts to get journals to retract his work and investigations of his private life.
Efforts to have scientific journals retract published articles detrimental to industry are not limited to pesticide and GMO research. It now includes investigations of climate change denial.
In February 2013, Stephen Lewandowsky headed a team of investigators who found that those who reject climate science more often believe in conspiracy theories. Soon after Frontiers in Psychology published the research, it was beset by outraged denialists. As threats of litigation mounted, on March 21, 2014, Frontiers retracted the Lewandowsky article, not because of methodological issues, but to avoid legal problems. (1)
The mother of research vilification is that on nuclear meltdowns. Though discounting the effects of Three Mile Island and Fukushima has been a favorite pastime of the nuclear industry, it is Chernobyl where the results have been most clear and the findings most systematically ignored.
What is taken as the gospel truth regarding deaths resulting from the April 1986 Chernobyl meltdown is the Chernobyl Forum Report published by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2006. It estimated 4,000 deaths. In 2009, a much more thorough analysis by Yablokov and others estimated the number of Chernobyl-caused deaths at 985,000.
Immediately, defenders of the nuclear industry jumped on the Yablokov analysis, claiming that it “obfuscated” the truth, its references were from sources “hitherto unknown” and “it was in a range of rather science fiction than science.” So vituperative and continuous were the attacks that WHO still will not recognize the corrected figures. Some climate change activists have sided with the nuclear industry from a misguided belief that radiation is less dangerous than coal plants. Countering the accusation that the manuscript had not been peer reviewed, senior author Yablokov noted that “The original Russian edition had two of the highest quality peer reviewers: Prof. Dmitry Grodzinsky (head of the Ukrainian State Radioprotection Committee) and Prof. Helen Burlakova (chair of the Russian Radiobiological Society).” (2)
Katz points out the absurdity of the claim that the Yablokov study does not cite peer-reviewed research. (3) The WHO figure of 4,000 deaths is based on 11 studies, only two of which are peer reviewed. The Yablokov analysis cites 112 studies, 46 of which are peer-reviewed. Those disparaging the Yablokov study dismiss reports from groups such as Greenpeace as scientifically worthless while accepting reports from the nuclear industry at face value.
Of course, the biggest difference in the two studies is the vastly greater number of deaths estimated by Yablokov. There are at least three reasons for the discrepancy.
1. The WHO report limits its estimation of deaths to three groups within three countries with a total population of 605,000. Yablokov’s estimates include radiation effects on the entire globe (7 billion), especially countries near, but outside of the former USSR, where 57 percent of the fallout was deposited.
2. The WHO report focused on current radiation exposure. It ignored or minimized (a) future exposure and (b) massive radiation received at the time of the meltdown.
3. The WHO report focused on a narrow range of cancers and birth defects. In contrast Yablokov’s conclusion was that . . . in . . . countries contaminated to varying degrees by radionuclides from Chernobyl, there has been a significant increase in all types of cancer; in diseases of the respiratory, cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, urogenital, endocrine, immune, lymphoid, and nervous systems; prenatal, perinatal, infant and child mortality; spontaneous abortion, deformities and genetic anomalies; disturbance and retardation of mental development; neuropsychological illness, and blindness. For those who claim to pursue scientific truth to ignore effects of this magnitude and minimize authors who document it confirms that treatment of GMO research is neither new nor distinct. Harassment of researchers and suppression of findings that contradict powerful economic interests permeate science. Corporations have enormous influence over what appears on the news and what gets swept under the rug.
Carrots Over Sticks
Reacting to research after it is published could be called rear-end repression. It is nasty and messy, and educational institutions hate being involved in it because it pulls the fig leaf off of their facade of objectivity. Front-end domination is much more prevalent; it refers to the way government and industry guide research in their preferred direction.
Kris Hundley describes a crystal clear example in “Koch Brothers Buy Economics Department.” A foundation bankrolled by Charles G. Koch put up $1.5 million for positions in Florida State University’s Department of Economics. “In return, his representatives get to screen and sign off on any hires for a new program promoting ‘political economy and free enterprise . . .’ The contract specifies that an advisory committee appointed by Koch decides which candidates should be considered.”
Is this basically an obscene version of standard operating procedure at Any University, USA? Is it any different from Peabody funding clean coal studies at Washington University in St. Louis (where Barry Commoner once headed the Center for the Biology of Natural Systems)? Or, is it different from an agricultural school focusing on fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides and fungicides?
During the 25 years I worked at St. Louis Psychiatric Rehabilitation Center, I often collaborated with faculty at the Missouri Institute of Mental Health, which was a branch of the University of Missouri medical school. It appeared that the Institute upheld the practice of hiring and retaining faculty who could bring in grant money. Faculty were free to attract money in any way that they could, but the drug companies provided the most and largest grants. So, while everyone had academic freedom to investigate whatever they wanted, those who researched drug benefits were more free than others.
The Land Institute’s David van Tassel computed figures that explain the regard that the US government has for organic farming. Food, which many feel is the most basic human need, gets a total funding of $1.12 billion, or one-27th of the $29.9 billion which goes to medical research. Organic and sustainable food production receives a total of $43 million, or one-695th of that going to medical research. (4)
While funding is critical in shaping basic research, so is the way that articles are “peer-reviewed” before being published in scientific journals. In order to become a peer who is invited to review articles, a person must previously publish articles in that area. Conversely, a person who repeatedly publishes articles in a journal will be invited to review articles for it. This means that biotech researchers who publish articles discounting GMO dangers and nuclear researchers who publish articles showing the safety of nukes will soon be the ones making judgment calls on which new articles are fit for publication. As more and more industry researchers publish their material, expect journals to move in the direction of accepting fewer critical findings.
In a Scientific American article, Charles Seife details how drug companies have become particularly adept at maximizing the likelihood that scientific research will find what they want.
1. Corporate ghostwriters can produce an entire article for a researcher (who may or may not have been the one who actually did the research and who may or may not acknowledge the role of the true author).
2. Companies pay thousands of dollars to academics who give lectures favorable to drugs.
3. Money talks to the mind: Researchers who have received more money from a drug company perceive that its drugs are safer than do researchers without those financial ties.
4. Requirements that researchers report financial conflicts of interest when publishing articles tend not to work because (a) there are no consequences for failing to report conflicts and (b) backup systems to ensure reporting don’t work.
5. The same problems regarding not reporting conflicts of interest occur when applying for grants.
6. Management at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), which gives tens of billions of dollars in grants, discourages investigating conflicts of interest.
7. NIH advisory committee members receive large sums of money from drug companies for speaking and consulting.
8. NIH waivers for conflicts of interest are supposed to be exceptional, but are passed out like candy on Halloween.
In other words, the problem is not with a rogue drug company or researcher here and there, but with the entire system — granting institutions, research labs, journals and professional societies. There is an interconnected whole which ensures that profit talks.
Who Determines the Goals of Science and Technology?
If we limit our framework to the way that corporations buy off some researchers and punish thought criminals, then we might approach science as if it is an eternal truth waiting to be discovered by those whose hearts are pure and untainted by money. This perspective fails to recognize that technological changes are not separate from the society that gives birth to them. No change is inevitable.
Before a technology can spread throughout society, its advocates must vigorously lobby for it, build an infrastructure and arrange for “bribes, pork-barrel legislation and regulatory exemptions.” Every new technology that “takes hold” is first created within a society that defines its investigation as valuable science.
One of the main reasons for pursuing a particular technology at a particular time in history is its usefulness to the few who dominate the many. Larry Lohmann and Nicholas Hildyard give the example of the molding machine adopted at the Chicago McCormick manufacturing plant during the mid-1880s. One might think that management would bring in new machines to “modernize” the plant and make it more efficient. This was not the case. The “new machines produced inferior castings at a higher cost than the machines they replaced . . .”
In the 19th century, why would anyone install more expensive equipment that produced a lower quality product? Because McCormick was slugging it out with the National Union of Iron Molders and the new machines could be run by unskilled workers who replaced union members.
In the 20th century, why did the mental health industry begin encouraging the use of drugs for problems like depression and obsessive-compulsion when there were already cognitive-behavioral treatments that work quite well without creating the risk of brain damage? Because corporate medicine and pharmacy were in a frenzy to centralize mental health care under the control of psychiatrists who would use the most expensive treatment.
In the 21st century, why is Big Food obsessed with spreading GMO technology when nobody who eats food is asking for it and it is fraught with environmental and health dangers? Because GMOs are a core component of a grand plan to replace small farmers with mega-farms, which produce uniform products for the global market and ignore needs to feed the local population.
By beginning with the overall goal of the food industry, a clearer picture of the suppression of research on GMO dangers emerges. Corporate agriculture defines the problem as how to increase the industry’s control over food production. GMOs rely on chemical inputs that raise the cost of production and thereby destroy small farms. Good research is then defined as investigations that help accomplish these goals, including demonstrating that GMO and chemicalized agriculture is efficient and safe. Suppression of findings that demonstrate the dangers of these crops is a last resort to be used only when the opposition is getting too large. Thus, attacks on scientists such as Pusztai, Chapela and Séralini are validations of the strength of the resistance movement.
Defending the right of scientists to investigate dangers of GMO food could not be successful if that defense were limited to demanding free scientific inquiry while ignoring the way that agro dollars control the world’s food. The food industry will use any technique it can to squash significant opposition. That includes softening their blows against critics until the heat dies down and then beginning the attacks anew. The right to scientific investigation can only be protected if it is part of a larger effort to challenge the right of corporations to define what good food is and how it should be grown. The fact that the food sovereignty movement fully understands the unity of these goals is why it is so strong and why Big Food fears it so much.

I was initially dreading reading the comment section but I was pleasantly surprised.
I’m only going to comment on the part of your article that talks about the study I know about (from first-hand reading and understanding), which is the Séralini Study.

Both of these statements are false. First, the study, despite its extremely low quality, did not show increased tumour development. It only appeared that way because Séralini avoided any rigorous analysis of his data, which would have revealed his study for the peace of garbage that it really was (and I’m not saying this lightly). Second, while I’m sure that Monsanto’s research is not perfect, because no study ever is, I assure you that Séralini’s study could never be compared positively to any other published study, it’s just that bad.
You say the reason given to retract the article, namely that “the results presented (while not incorrect) are inconclusive” is “astounding”. While it’s true that not all scientific studies offer definitive answers, in general, no study is published unless it adds at least a little something to the scientific knowledge. Séralini’s study did not even do that. His study is scientific equivalent of flipping a coin, and if you get heads, you say GMOs cause cancer – i.e. worthless. The only thing that can be concluded after reading Séralini’s study is that you have wasted you time. I’m repeating myself, but it really is that bad.
The journal retracted the article and it could be debated whether or not this was a good thing for science in general (and this has been debated in the scientific community). Without going too far in this valid debate, I must that I was very happy when the study was retracted. Too often, scientists prefer to stand clear of discussions of topics that are controversial in the public’s mind. I feel that activists would be helped a great deal is scientists acted as they did in this case (because yes, it was scientists that were outraged by this study and had its publication reviewed, not Monsanto), and took a stance in favour of science and truth.
I’d also like to point out that some anti-GMO activists were outraged at the publication of this study. Their logic, which I agree with (even if I don’t agree with the fear mongering regarding GMOs in general), was that the publication and promotion of such a scientifically bankrupt study was bound to discredit the movement.
I’ll also point out the hypocrisy in this part of your article. You quote someone saying “any time a study has at least one author with a professional tie to the biotech industry, you don’t even have to read the study to know the conclusion. It’s concluded that GE crops are A-okay.” First, this is hypocritical because not only is Séralini a notorious anti-GMO advocate, giving him a potential conflict of interest on par with that of industry experts, but he also released a book and a movie at the same time that his study was published, another blatant conflict of interest (while also limiting independent criticism of his study by forbidding journalists from seeking expert analysis in preparation for its publication, ensuring that only credulous journalists would cover his study in the critical few days following its publication). Thus, by your logic, we should simply dismiss his study, which you don’t do. This is also conspiracy thinking, because it dismisses the far more likely explanation that industry expert publish studies showing the safety of GMOs because 1) industry only hires competent scientists, and 2) the GMOs that have made it to that stage of testing are in fact safe. Although I would never trust industry in general (i.e. strict regulations and oversight are necessary), considering the current regulations and scientific consensus, these two hypotheses are for more likely than your conspiracy. Of course, all of this is of little value in this case, because simply reading Séralini’s study reveals it for the piece of bad science that it is. On the other hand, judging on the number of people defending his ridiculous study, Séralini is certainly a master of marketing.

I think you are right about the hypocrisy part about interest conflicting, but I think interest conflicting is something that people should still be cautious. The 2007-08 economy crisis was completely not seen by the mainstream economy circle, and deregulation is the doctrine that cannot be offended, and now look how many big economists had ties to those financial industries? Lots of them. Industry only hires competent scientists is not a reason to guarantee the result either. Monsanto apparently hire competent scientists, and their research were fine but in the “results presented” were modified or even fake, like the case in agent orange or growth hormone or bio-degradibility of roundup. The internal experiments were scientific but that’s not the thing got published. I am not to argue that interesting conflicting is an absolute index but I think a more careful review should be added to those research who has this issue.
Also, in http://www.scientificamerican.com/article/the-truth-about-genetically-modified-food/?page=5 this article (quite pro-GMO), the people think Séralini’s study was more or less unfairly discredited argue that it was quite standard in drugtest-like research. Another thing I want to point out is that isn’t that feeding the actual roundup and observing a longer period of time is a better way to do it if people avoid all mistakes you mentioned in Séralini’s study? Even Séralini’s study is wrong does not prove that other researches prove the opposite is correct.
Also, the documentary “the world according to Monsanto” interviewed the reviewer who review the researches from Monsanto, who said it was a bad science too. Monsanto just refused to give the raw data, quite similar to you criticism to Séralini’.
Now comes a question, are those really bad sciences or not? Are bad sciences so frequently published in journals?
As the blog you recommended, I think the science part is fine which is basically saying GMO are mostly safe for human intake, or more precisely, whether GMO is safe or not is case dependent and can be tested by current technologies, which I more or less buy this point since I don’t think GMO can only produce bad results or risk to health.
That blog however fail to comment on the dreams those companies claim that GMO have. It pretty much ignore that USDA said that the increase in the production in corns, cottons and soy almost have nothing to do with GMO in US. The improvement of method in agriculture is the main reason. This has nothing to do with the food-safety issue, but this, in my opinion, is related to the political part of the GMO agriculture (then, why are businesses pushing for GMO?). I also think it’s the politics or the corporations’ interests that produce the anti-GMO movement, which science cannot solve this problem.
Indeed there’s irrational fear in the anit-GMO society, but isn’t there an ignorance of the science society on what’s people’s concern?
It’s just like the fracking issue. Studies claims that “fracking”–which means breaking the rock” is safe, but it’s the other part of the process, for example leaking, that cause the problem, so scientists’ fracking is a specific process but for the people’s lives being affected or people against it, fracking means the whole industrial package (it’s unfair to ask non-experts to express the issue precisely, right?), so it’s ignorant to state that fracking is safe. I think this is similar to situations for GMO issues.
Regarding your Scientific American link, it seems only one person in mentioned as supporting Séralini. The fact remains that the overwhelming scientific consensus is that his study is worthless. As Richard Park said, “There is, alas, no scientific claim so preposterous that a scientist cannot be found to vouch for it.” There is no way to defend the Séralini’s study without losing any pretence at scientific credibility. Should longer study be used? Maybe. But that would require to first show that there is an actual difference in results from a long study compared to a short study. To date, there is no indication that it is the case. Séralini could have done that, but science and safety did not seem to be his main interest. His study was a marketing gimmick, nothing more.
You are right that the fact that he is wrong does not prove the opposite, it only brings us back to the preponderance of evidence (which is very solid) that states that currently used GMOs are perfectly safe. Bad science is frequently published in scientific journals, particularly low-impact-factor journals. Conflicts of interests is a real issue. That means we have to pay more attention and ask for more information, but not that we need to disregard anything in our evaluations.
I don’t know where you got the information that the USDA thinks that GMOs do not help yields. Honestly, to me, this sounds like conspiratorial thinking too. The idea that GMOs offers no advantages (yield, etc.) to farmers supposes that the overwhelming majority of farmers, from small family-owned farms to large corporations, are incompetent. That’s simply impossible.
You are right that the anti-GMO movement is mostly supported by people that are opposed to things other than GMOs, but nonetheless see GMOs as a way to make progress on those issues. They just end up being the puppets to other huge industries (mostly “Big Bio”), who are laughing all the way to the bank. What’s more, important food safety and environmental issues remain unaddressed.
I should mention the case of Golden Rice, the treatment of which by so-called environmentalists is, in my view, completely immoral, and is one of the main reasons I want nothing to do with Greenpeace and their ilk.
You just mentioned one thing I plan to but didn’t mentioned. I don’t think the number of scientist say so is important. Science is not democracy. It’s the argument that’s more important. Indeed there’s only “one” supporter, well, not even support, he just pointed out that the method and numbers or species of rats that Séralini’s study used is quite normal in drug test studies. If you think those drug tests studies are mostly not accountable, or that’s in fact not standard in drug test then I agree this “standard method and condition” argument is not able to defend Séralini’s study.
There are reports in union of concerned scientists, which you can check out. They don’t denounce GMO, but rather question how effective it is. Still the report I think it’s about those using conventional farming, nothing to do with organic stuffs. The USDA attribute the increase to other parts of advancement in agriculture.
Also, why people always like to call the thing they don’t believe conspiracy. I think this is pretty unscientific. That in some way reflects there’s also religious belief in the power of GMO.
Food security is another pro-GMO reasone, but
I think that potentially assume GMO is “the hope” for food safety, but I don’t think that’s true.
As for the golden rice. I think the decease can be solved without introducing the rice, and I think the golden rice is not “the only” way to do it.
First, is it impossible to grow things rather than rice? I don’t think so. Can’t they grow mixed plants that produce sufficient and balanced nutrition? Does any one address that?
For example, it also needs fats to help absorbing the nutrients to prevent the blindness to happen, so does the rice really the savior? Are the people’s diet able to make the rice to work?
There are other crops and animals that could be introduced to solve the problem. Isn’t that something also not so hard to think of or work with?
You can ask that if the countries in Africa has the resources that most western countries have, are there other ways to solve the problem. My answer is yes. I think it’s the resource distribution what cause the problem.
In my opinion, it’s the same as hunger problem. GMO is not the way since it didn’t deal with the origin of the problems. I think if you look at the gift list of world vision, you might agree with me. The golden rice is not special at all. That’s why I think these problems are political problem. If political problems are solved, then GMO rice is not even needed.
If we look at practice, how will the aid provided. One is directly provide the rice. Another way is to provide resources and technology aids. For the first one, how much different it is to provide rice and supplements or additives (how many supplements US people take per year?) ? Wouldn’t this solve the problem way before the golden rice appear? If the injections of resources is the way, then as I mentioned before, GMO is not the only choice.
Is the golden rice case immoral? In some sense, I will still say yes, since due to not develop alternative methods before made golden rice could be the only choice on the table. However, in other sense, I will say no, because things can be solve in the existing system before the golden rice show up.

What you describe is the Nirvana fallacy. Sure, there a multiple ways the problem of vitamin A deficiency could be solved, and Golden Rice is only one of them. And even without the tireless effort of environmental groups try suppress it, Golden Rice would not have solved all the food accessibility problems of the world. The goal was to give vitamin A-enriched rice to subsistence farmer of the world who already live on a poor diet based on rice, saving hundreds of thousands of lives per year in the process.
I judge the actions of environmentalists as immoral because they actively worked to prevent the implementation of a feasible solution (free GMOs rice) without providing an equivalent alternative themselves. If they were going to prevent a company from giving a life-saving technology to impoverished populations, they should have paid for an alternative (and I can’t stress this enough, Big Agro is literally giving it away). Over the years, with just this issue of vitamin A deficiency, all environmentalists have accomplished was ensuring the death of millions of children worldwide. It just can’t be defended.
I’m all for helping other people out of poverty and dependency, I would just like them to survive until the help gets there.
If you are arguing from the prospective that they are giving the rice away freely, then you are right the environmentalists are immoral, since there’s no reason not to incorporate one more possible way in to the solution kits of Vit A deficiency.
I feel strange and also sad that environmentalists were not able to provide alternatives if that’s really the case. If you can grow rice, yo can actually grow lots of different things.
