A case in point, I met a woman from Okinawa about 14 to 15 years ago in the Philippines, and she was very upset about the continuation of American military bases on her island that had caused her and many other Okinawans’ humiliation and grief, made worse by the abject failure of Japan to end the presence of the military bases that violated their sovereignty, cultural and political dignity, and self-determination. Likewise, the US de facto military bases and covert operations in the Philippines, so insidious, are causing similar problems and tension here, stirring up nationalistic sentiments, including deep-seated resentment, humiliation, and bitterness that will take many years, a long healing process, to overcome
