This article by Alexandra Ulmer of Reuters says Venezuela will allow 1500 recently deported Colombians to return and legalize their status.
She added
“It remains to be seen whether the shaken deportees will want to return to Venezuela, which is mired in a spiraling economic crisis where basic goods such as toilet paper and bottled water are running low.”
War torn Colombia has the second largest number of internally displace people in the world – surpassed only by Syria. About 200,000 refugees live in Venezuela according to the UNHCR and about another 100,000 live in Ecuador. Colombia has consistently had – by far – the worst human rights record in the region, and, not surprisingly, is a close US ally. The USA has fueled its civil war for decades with billions of dollars in arms and other military support. Could a reporter keep his or her job pointing out those very relevant facts in an article like this – facts at least as relevant as Venezuela’s (by comparison) very minor problems?
This article is a nice illustration of the propaganda support both Colombia and the USA receive from the corporate press. Ā It has long facilitated Colombia’s human rights catastrophe.
