Sarah Starkey

Sarah Starkey is the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists’ brand manager. She joined the Bulletin as the social media and analytics coordinator in March of 2021. Before joining the Bulletin, Starkey worked as a digital marketing coordinator at Houchens Industries Inc. in Bowling Green, KY. Starkey graduated from Western Kentucky University in 2020 with a degree in advertising, a minor in journalism, and a certificate in UX design. During her time at WKU, Starkey held various positions—copywriter, social media manager, account executive, multi-media creative, and assistant agency manager—at Imagewest, an award-winning student-run advertising agency. At Imagewest, Starkey discovered a passion for working with nonprofits. She provided social media strategy on a rebrand for the wildlife rehabilitation center, Nolin River Wildlife, and oversaw the creation of a website for a local refugee center, the International Center of Kentucky. As president of her university’s student American Advertising Federation chapter, she led a team of over 20 students in competing in the 2020 National Student Advertising Competition with a campaign for Adobe. Her chapter placed second in its district and Starkey received a “Best Q&A Participant” award created for her by the judges due to her performance in defending her university’s campaign.

CRITICAL ACTION

Critical Action is a longtime friend of Z and a music and storytelling project grounded in liberation, solidarity, and resistance to authoritarian power. Through music, narrative, and multimedia, the project engages the same political realities and movement traditions that guide and motivate Z’s work.

If this project resonates with you, you can learn more about it and find ways to support the work using the link below.

Independent media is not disappearing because the ideas are weak.

It is disappearing because platforms reward speed, outrage, and algorithmic visibility over thoughtful analysis.

More than 100,000 people read Z every month, free of paywalls, ads, and billionaire owners. It takes fewer than 1 in 100 of them to fund all of it: 1,000 donors who keep Z independent, for everyone, and build what comes next.
