In this end-of-year message on behalf of DiEM25, Yanis Varoufakis reflects on the year Europe’s political, economic, and moral order fractured. Speaking amid escalating war, permanent austerity, rising authoritarianism, and deepening geopolitical subordination, he explains why the European Union has reached a historic turning point. From Ukraine and NATO, to US–China rivalry, Trump’s tariffs, and Europe’s worsening economic crisis, this video shows how decisions taken after the 2008 financial crisis led to today’s instability, and why 2026 will be decisive for Europe’s future.

This is not a retrospective analysis, but a warning for 2026 and a call to resist war, austerity, and the erosion of democracy. Democracy, peace, and social justice in Europe will survive only through organised, transnational resistance.

Yanis Varoufakis born 24 March 1961 is a Greek economist, politician, and co-founder of DiEM25. A former academic, he served as the Greek Minister of Finance from January to July 2015. Since 2019, he is again a Member of Greek Parliament and MeRA25 leader. He is the author of several books including, Another Now (2020).
