Iām not very religious in any religion and never spent much time thinking about papal leadership. Ā LikeĀ millions of others,Ā I was outraged by the extent of the sexual abuse of children by Catholic clergy, and disgusted by theĀ ChurchĀ hierarchyās protection of the abusersāthereby, essentially, sentencing many children to torture. Ā (The discovery a few days ago that US army officers instructed men to ignore the rape of boys by Afghan soldiers and eldersĀ showsĀ that it is not only churchmen who are capable of such behavior.)
ButĀ FrancisĀ soonĀ captured my respect. Ā The issues he is fighting for are,Ā simply,Ā the most important world problems. Ā First, we wonāt even have a world unless leaders and influencers of public opinionĀ actĀ radically andĀ quickly to reduce fossil fuel usage. Ā As former Irish President Mary Robinson put it, climate change is the leading human rights issue. Ā Second, we wonāt have a world worth living in unless leaders and influencers of public opinion shed their obedience to capitalist profiteers and allow workers, people of color, andĀ allĀ women to share in the worldās wealth.Ā Third,Ā Francisās insistence on welcoming and, more importantly, respecting refugees andĀ migrants.Ā Ā Fourth, his warning against āevery type of fundamentalism, whether religious or of any other kind,ā as he put it in his speech to the US Congress.
The message comesĀ not onlyĀ fromĀ Francisās words, butĀ also fromĀ his actions.Ā He tries to set an example byĀ rejecting luxury and living simply. Ā HeĀ honors ordinary people, poor people, people of color. Ā That he does these things has given him enormous popularity in a short time. Ā He has raised hopes.
So I was dismayed to read about feminist groups demonstrating against him. Ā StopPatriarchy.org organized a āProcession of Unrepentant Womenā (becauseĀ FranciswouldĀ āallowāĀ
Then I noticed that the strongest criticism of the Popeās intransigence on sex and gender issues comes from Catholics. Ā Especially nuns, who have openly defied Vatican teachings and been harshly punished for it.Ā AsĀ Catholic spokeswomanĀ MiriamĀ DuignanĀ
Catholic criticism does not come only from women. Ā Jon OāBrien, president of Catholics for Choice,Ā points out that afterĀ Francisās instruction to the Extraordinary General Assembly of Bishops in 2014āāNo one must say `This canāt be said ā¦āāāthe meeting of 227 men and 25 womenĀ neverthelessĀ clung to the ban on birth control and homosexuality.Ā Asked if this was misogynist, the Pope replied, āThe fact is woman was taken from a rib.ā
TheseĀ patriarchal assumptions are not only anti-woman but anti-sexual. Ā The PopeĀ āavoids referring to Mary ⦠as a loving wife,āĀ MiriamĀ DuignanĀ points out,Ā because to do so āwould suggest a sexual relationship that is outside the express purposes of reproduction and would prevent women from remaining chaste.āĀ So heĀ cannotĀ accept equality for gays and lesbians, for they cannot be āchasteā in his understanding. Ā Nor equality forĀ transgender people, becauseĀ he seesĀ humanity itselfĀ asĀ a binary, in which men go out into the world, women nurture at home.
Furthermore,Ā this sex-and-gender conservatism underminesĀ Francisās own goals.Ā TheĀ 17 Sustainable Development Goals just adopted by the UN, which closely resemble the Popeās views, cite gender equality not only as a principle of justice but as essential for the other goals to be realized. TheĀ Church is part of theĀ relatedĀ problemsĀ of inequalityĀ and climate change, throughĀ its ban on birth control. By excluding women,Ā the ChurchĀ remains controlled by an all-male curiaĀ dedicated to retaining their power and privilege. Ā Iām not saying that women are immune from such motives. But as women and men are currently socialized, women would not have tolerated, let alone practiced sexual abuse. Women would, on the whole, be less militaristic and more diplomatic in resolving conflict. Ā US polls now show that women are typically about 20 percent more favorable to reversing climate change, help for refugees, reducing inequality and fighting against racism.
So while Iām notĀ goingĀ to demonstrate against PopeĀ Francis, I respect the feelings of those who do. Ā People who care about preserving our world and ending violence need to keepĀ demanding that the Catholic Church align itself with sex equality and aĀ positive view of human sexuality in all its forms.
When my daughter was born, the seven-year-old son of aĀ closeĀ friendāa boy well indoctrinated by his feminist motherāsent her a drawing. Ā Printed in his child-like letters at the top was āGIRLS CAN BE ANYTHING THEY WANT TO BE.āĀ Below, four occupationsĀ were illustrated by rough drawings,Ā including one of a person in robes, labeled āPope.ā Ā My husband and I laughed, loved it, framed it,Ā and hung it on the wall. Ā We laughed partlyĀ because the young boyĀ didnāt realizeĀ that you had to be Catholic to be pope, and we arenāt; I donāt know if he knew that theĀ veryĀ idea of a woman pope was also funny.Ā Maybe someday it wonāt be funny.
