A quarĀter of aĀ milĀlion AmerĀiĀcans are now dead due to the incomĀpeĀtence at the head of the RepubĀliĀcan ParĀty and the moral cowĀardice that caused the parĀty to supĀport that incomĀpeĀtence at all levĀels. Tens of milĀlions more AmerĀiĀcans are sufĀferĀing from the ecoĀnomĀic fallĀout of our failĀure to conĀtrol the panĀdemĀic. RepubĀliĀcans in ConĀgress have refused to pass aĀ minĀiĀmalĀly adeĀquate relief packĀage, and 12 milĀlion AmerĀiĀcans could see their benĀeĀfits run out by the end of the year, leavĀing them desĀtiĀtute. The RepubĀliĀcan ParĀty has spent its time durĀing this health criĀsis tryĀing to legalĀly invalĀiĀdate the health care law that proĀvides covĀerĀage to nearĀly 30 milĀlion of theirĀ constituents.
WideĀspread death and mateĀrĀiĀal ruin are what the GOP has already delivĀered in 2020. We are long past the point of havĀing debates over whether to āāplay hardĀballā withĀ them.
ForĀtuĀnateĀly for those who enjoy the process of watchĀing our nationās decline play out as aĀ sort of apocĀaĀlypĀtic realĀiĀty show, the DemoĀcĀraĀtĀic ParĀty has done litĀtle to demonĀstrate that it is up to the task of stopĀping any of this. Itās not just the failĀure to get even aĀ modĀest relief bill passed, or the DemocĀratsā uninĀspirĀing results in the most recent ConĀgresĀsionĀal elecĀtions. It is their years-long patĀtern of being outĀmaĀneuĀvered by Mitch McConnell and comĀpaĀny, who are willĀing to destroy any instiĀtuĀtion and cause any amount of sufĀferĀing among the lowĀer classĀes in order to win. RepubĀliĀcans have seized conĀtrol of the courts, engaged in sysĀtemĀatĀic votĀer supĀpresĀsion and creĀatĀed large-scale proĀpaĀganĀda netĀworks to stay in powĀer, as DemocĀrats wave around the rule book and wonĀder why no refĀerĀee has stepped in to tell everyĀone that they are, in fact,Ā right.
In (modĀest) defense of the DemocĀrats, it is not easy to negoĀtiĀate against someĀone who does not care about breakĀing any numĀber of rules and causĀing any amount of human misĀery in purĀsuit of vicĀtoĀry. Itās like one army tryĀing to meet under aĀ white flag to desĀigĀnate aĀ batĀtleĀfield, while the opposĀing army takes the opporĀtuĀniĀty to burn the cities. It creĀates aĀ funĀdaĀmenĀtal powĀer imbalĀance. As anyĀone who has wresĀtled with such aĀ foe will tell you, there is aĀ cerĀtain point at which you must accept the fact that you need to be ruthĀless in order to have any chance of stopĀping aĀ ruthĀless oppoĀnent. Donāt bring boxĀing gloves to aĀ machete fight. The DemocĀrats have nevĀer been able to conĀvince themĀselves of this basic truth, and so theyāāāand weāāāconĀtinĀue toĀ lose.
No matĀter how bruĀtal, all negoĀtiĀaĀtions still adhere to aĀ basic logĀic. In order to mainĀtain balĀance, you must exerĀcise powĀer over someĀthing that the othĀer side cares about. If the Left (very broadĀly speakĀing) cares about basic health and human safeĀtyāāāmeanĀing fundĀing for healthĀcare, eduĀcaĀtion, housĀing, and othĀer human needs to proĀmote equalĀiĀty and take care of the less forĀtuĀnateāāāand the Right does not care about any of that, and is willĀing to scrap it all in purĀsuit of their own goals, then the Left will always find itself forced to give RepubĀliĀcans what they want in order to simĀply guard the basics against destrucĀtion. Thus the Right can seize an ever greater degree of powĀer as the Left tries to stop the social safeĀty net from shrinkĀing quite so fast. This dynamĀic has gotĀten us to where we are today:Ā fucked.
Appeals to fairĀness or norms or human decenĀcy do not work. Nor do appeals to the pubĀlic at large, which is now so dividĀed and entrenched that āāWe want to take away your healthĀcareā is aĀ posiĀtion that the RepubĀliĀcan ParĀty holds openĀly and the base will enthuĀsiĀasĀtiĀcalĀly back, despite the fact that it will kill many of them. DemocĀrats in ConĀgress need to stop waitĀing for the arc of the moral uniĀverse to bend towards jusĀtice, and start decidĀing what they can hold hostage that RepubĀliĀcans careĀ about.
I have an idea: the Defense budĀget. That is what the DemocĀrats can hold hostage. That is the barĀgainĀing chip that they can use to extract some of their priĀorĀiĀties from the RepubĀliĀcans. They should filĀiĀbuster the Defense budĀget every sinĀgle year as aĀ tool to make RepubĀliĀcans negoĀtiĀate for things that norĀmal peoĀple need. There are only so many things that will make aĀ moralĀly bankĀrupt parĀty lose its cool, and this is one of them. So doĀ it.
There is aĀ conĀcepĀtuĀal probĀlem among DemocĀrats. They see āācutĀting the Defense budĀgetā as aĀ proĀgresĀsive priĀorĀiĀty that is not shared by the partyās modĀerĀates, and thereĀfore just one more issue to be hagĀgled over interĀnalĀly. That is the wrong way to look at it. Instead, they should recĀogĀnize that the Defense budĀget is one of the only RepubĀliĀcan sacred cows that they can grab onto, and thereĀfore, it is leverĀage. Donāt just give your oppoĀnent his priĀorĀiĀties for free, get someĀthing in return for them. This is an insight that Mitch McConnell had long ago, but his DemoĀcĀraĀtĀic counĀterĀparts apparĀentĀly have not. AĀ reaĀsonĀable perĀson might say, āāNot havĀing tens of milĀlions of AmerĀiĀcans slide into desĀperĀate poverĀty or risk death due to inadĀeĀquate proĀtecĀtion from this deadĀly panĀdemĀic is aĀ priĀorĀiĀty that we all share, regardĀless of parĀty.ā But aĀ ruthĀless basĀtard would say, āāThe lives of all of these AmerĀiĀcans, most of whom are not donors to my politĀiĀcal camĀpaigns, is aĀ perĀfect barĀgainĀing chip for me to use in order to achieve wholĀly unreĀlatĀed things that IĀ want.ā
Mitch McConnell is that ruthĀless basĀtard, and he keeps onĀ winning.
I donāt care whether or not you āāsupĀport the troops.ā The DemocĀrats owe us all the willĀingĀness to fight this batĀtle on its own terms. The lack of aĀ meanĀingĀful relief bill is an acute human criĀsis that RepubĀliĀcans do not care about one bit. The response must be as urgent as the criĀsis itself. No relief? No milĀiĀtary. No healthĀcare? No milĀiĀtary. No safe schools? No milĀiĀtary. If your oppoĀnent does not care about the criĀsis at hand, creĀate aĀ criĀsis that they will care about. Any DemocĀrats worĀried about the RepubĀliĀcan attack ads that would result from such aĀ stratĀeĀgy should ask themĀselves why 250,000 dead bodĀies this year has someĀhow not caused RepubĀliĀcan votĀers to disĀapĀpear. You need to do what you need toĀ do.
Of course, DemoĀcĀraĀtĀic leadĀers have already negoĀtiĀatĀed against themĀselves on this issue in advance. But the fact is that if they keep doing the same thing, we will get the same results: dead poor peoĀple, and plenĀty ofĀ guns.
