āBoom,ā wrote SarahĀ Isgur on Twitter in 2014, quoting a tweet from the publication Free Beacon: āThe Clinton News Network is back!ā
Two years later, Cesar Sayoc was rantingĀ on Facebook about the āClinton News Network.ā By the end of 2018, Sayoc was sending a wave of pipe bombs to critics of President Donald Trump.Ā Three of the bombs were addressed to CNN. None went off, but FBI Director Christopher Wray described them as āIEDsā ā improvised explosives devices. Boom.
On Tuesday, Politico reportedĀ that Isgur, a longtime GOP operative who most recently wasĀ a top officialĀ inĀ Trumpās Justice Department, has been hired by CNN. Isgur, who has no experience in journalism, will be one of several editors whoĀ coordinate the channelāsĀ coverageĀ of U.S. politics.

Itās incredible that CNN executives would require its employees to welcome any Trump administration official as a colleague. Itās not that news outlets havenāt hired political hacks before; they have. But Trumpās obsessive demonization of the media and the consequences of that demonization specificallyĀ for CNN ā Trumpās top target āĀ are sui generis.
As Trump relentlesslyĀ repeats,Ā CNN is āFake News.ā They demonstrateĀ āextreme hatred and biasā toward him. They areĀ the āEnemy of the People!ā Most famously, Trump tweeted a video from his pro-wrestling daysĀ that wasĀ doctored to show him physically attacking someone with the CNN logo for a head.
According to Lesley Stahl of ā60 Minutes,ā in the summer of 2016, Trump explainedĀ to her off-camera that he attacks the news media āto discredit you all and demean you all so when you write negative stories about me no one will believe you.ā It was inevitable that this tactic would move some members of Trumpās base to action.
The windows of Sayocās van was covered with pictures and textĀ that were essentially Trumpās twitter account in collage form. Trump has called CNN ādishonestā over and over again. An image on Sayocās van read, āDISHONEST MEDIA/CNN SUCKS.ā
Sayoc was photographed at a Trump rally holding up a sign that similarly read, āCNN SUCKS.ā On Twitter Sayoc wrote, āMore lies con job Propaganda bye failing failing CNN garbage. ⦠They have nothing left but more lies.ā
Beyond Sayoc, an Arkansas man was arrestedĀ for allegedly making multiple āterroristic threatsā against CNN anchor Don Lemon. A Pennsylvania man called into C-SPANĀ to say that CNN āstarted the warā and that if he saw Lemon or CNNās Brian Stelter, āIām going to shoot them.ā CNN contributor April Ryan has saidĀ that the Trump White House has āput a target on my headā and that sheās been forced to hire a bodyguard.
Even Sayocās bomb spree didnāt slow Trumpās incitement. In fact, soon after Sayoc was arrested, Trump explained that the rightās anger toward āthe Fake News Media, the true Enemy of the Peopleā is understandable, and news outlets have only themselves to blame for whatever happens.
Isgur has worked for Ted Cruz, Mitt Romney, and the Republican National Committee and was deputy campaign manager for Carly Fiorina when Fiorina ran for the GOP presidential nomination in 2016. She was hired by theĀ Trump Justice Department in 2017 ā but not until she, as the Washington Post put it, was willing to ākowtow to Trumpā for criticizing him during the GOP primaries and swearĀ fealty to his agenda.
Like everyone willing to serve in the Trump administration, Isgur is complicit in the presidentās dangerous war on the media.Ā And sheās also personally been an active foot soldier in the decades-long assault on journalism by the right that has culminated in Trump.
She sarcastically referredĀ on Twitter to ābalanced reporting today from CNN,ā because the networkās chyronĀ referred to the explicitlyĀ anti-gayĀ and anti-abortionĀ Family Research Council as āanti-gay and anti-abortion.ā She tweeted out an article callingĀ CNNās Chris Cuomo ādespicableā for askingĀ if Fiorina ā after the November 2015 mass shooting at a Planned Parenthood clinic in Colorado Springs ā had āany sense of regretā over her misleading, incendiary claimsĀ about Planned Parenthood.
Isgur herself saidĀ that āthe liberal media tried to ignore truth about Planned Parenthood.ā She also attackedĀ āthe liberal mediaā ahead of the Iowa caucuses. āDespite efforts of media & political class,ā Isgur wrote, āCarly will not stop fighting to take our country back.ā She was angryĀ about āMSM bias.ā And soĀ on.
But none of this apparently matters to the people who run CNN. Have they asked Isgur to tell her new co-workers whether she disagrees with anything aboutĀ Trumpās views on CNN? Does she have any regrets about participating in a brand of politics that has put their lives in danger? Do they think her presence will damage morale?
Who knows? Neither CNN nor Isgur responded to a request for comment.
