Michael Moore talks nonsense sometimes but, credit where due, he was completely on target months ago about how and why Trump could pull off a victory. Angry white people in states like Ohio & Michigan, knowing damn well they’ve been screwed over by decades of trade deals, would use Trump as their “human Molotov Cocktail”.
However, African Americans, Latinos and Asians were screwed by the same trade deals. Why didn’t they also use Trump as their Molotov cocktail? The answer is that, for obvious reasons, they knew a Trump presidency would hurt them very badly.
Too many whites just didn’t care about the threat Trump posed to racial minorities and women. Of course, a lot of Trump voters (silently or otherwise) applauded his racism, xenophobia and misogyny. But simply ignoring or tolerating bigotry because you want to hurt the elites who wrecked your economic prospects is still a form of bigotry.
Trump’s victory may cause some people to overestimate the depth of white supremacy in the United States – just like Obama’s victories led many to unwisely declare white supremacy vanquished. But you can’t have extreme inequality, mass incarceration and constant war without callousness towards “others”. It’s abundantly clear in the United States who the “others” are. It includes many groups whom, judging by exit polls, you absolutely cannot blame for Trump’s victory.
Who Not To Blame For President-Elect Trump:
With African American voters, Trump lost by 80 points
With Latino voters, Trump lost by 36 points
With Asian voters, Trump Loses by 36 points
With Women, Trump lost by 12 points
With voters under 30 years of age, Trump lost by 18 points
With voters under 44 years of age, Trump lost by 8 points
With voters earning less than $30K per year, Trump lost by 12 points
With voters earning less than $50K per year, Trump lost by 9 points
Incidentally, to add self -insult to the U.S. political system’s self-injury, Trump lost the popular vote.
