The headline to this article by Alexandra Ulmer reads “Venezuela parliament leader squeezes media bosses over drugs story”
It is about a defamation suit that Diosdado Cabello, the Chavista head of the National Assembly, brought against some media outlets that accused him of being a drug lord.
The article notes “Opposition leaders and U.S. officials have for years made accusations of money-laundering and drug-trafficking against the governments of President Nicolas Maduro and predecessor Hugo Chavez.”
In fact, this is a tactic the US government and the opposition groups it funded used against Haitian President Jean Bertrand Aristide who was kidnapped by US troops in 2004. I wrote about those tactics here . I hate to sound unappreciative of an article that was quite fair and balanced, but US tactics in Haiti are very relevant in this case.
I was glad that Reuters was willing to point out that “Venezuela’s media arena was once virulently anti-government, and even contributed to stirring up a brief coup against Chavez in 2002.”
