“Yes, Europe is a garden. We have built a garden. Everything works… Most of the rest of the world is a jungle, and the jungle could invade the garden.” That was the warning of the European Union’s Foreign Policy Chief in 2022.

What did he mean? Where does this supposed “garden” begin and end?

For decades, the European Union has policed the border between the “garden” and the “jungle” with deadly force, raising the drawbridge to those fleeing Western wars, famine and climate breakdown.

Militarised border forces massacre asylum seekers. Coastal patrols attack migrants’ boats. Open-air prisons incarcerate those who reach Europe. The famous blue waters of the Mediterranean have been transformed into one of the world’s biggest graveyards.

This hostile environment has a name: Fortress Europe.
