Vijayan MJ, Age-31, Born in 1978 in Kerala, India. Have been a citizen of India since birth. Born to Christian clergy parents who believed in liberation theology and were active stakeholders in the battle against the casteism and classism propagated by the Church and the upper caste lobby. The battle within the church for the voting rights of the ‘backward’ people soon became a struggle for social justice and became one of India’s first movements of Dalit Christians inside and outside of the Church. Brought up through days of struggle, ostracisation by the church, humiliation to family and police arrest of my father from the very altar of the church – all for just daring to say and do what Christ did, radically influenced my understanding about the meaning of faith, life and relevance of people oriented politics. Educated in Delhi’s prestigious St.Stephen’s college (Bachelor and Master’s Degree in History), my first national exposure to the marginalised people’s struggle was through that of the Narmada Bachao Andolan and the National Fishworker’s Forum in early 1990s. The atmosphere of an elitist educational institution exposed and attracted one to extreme opposite and contrary ideologies/theories. Reading some of the most renowned thinkers of the world and India helped in the final phase of my conversion to be a radical humanist within the framework of left politics. I left my assignments with mainstream electronic media organisations in 2001 to join as a full-time volunteer activist with the National Alliance of (Indian) People’s Movements and later joined a Human Rights organisation which worked in Indian occupied Kashmir and North East region – The Other Media. Am presently the heading Delhi Forum – a support organisation based in the national capital of India, to provide solidarity and assistance to people’s movements and activists from all over the country. Delhi Forum is a 30 year old organisation, formed immediately after Indian Emergency – in 1978. I also contribute written analyses on varied people’s issues occasionally to news papers, magazines and e-journals / news portals in India and abroad. I have edited and published four academic and issue based books, on behalf of my respective organisations and continue as Editor, ‘Update Collectve’.
