Hugo Chávez was born in the small town of Sabaneta on July 28, 1954. Often remembered as a man of action and long speeches, Chávez was in fact a great strategist, a tremendous pedagogue and a creative thinker.

While I lived in Latin America for a number of years, I was involved in research and part of that also involved a visit to Venezuela for a short time. I have an extensive background in Latin American affairs, speak Spanish, and have done considerable research and reading on Venezuela, especially during the presidency of Hugo Chavez. My on/site visit was not long, but I was quite positively impressed during the short time I was there. I visited missions, talked to many “average” people, most spontaneous, people on the street conversations, and even those who sought greater progress and change, were positive in their comments on Chavez. I also was very aware of negative perceptions and responses in the US at the time even though I was living and teaching in Latin America.
Recently I was at an educational events with teachers and met briefly a Venezuelan woman, the first thing she asked when I mentioned I had been in Venezuela was when I had been there. When I mentioned that it was during the presidency of Chavez, we did not have time for extensive conversation but her response was visibly brief by positive.
