    Building Ceiba: Sustainable Shipping and Shipbuilding from the Mangroves of Costa Rica

    As someone who lives and travels aboard an old wooden sailboat, it probably makes sense that I’d share this project. Check it out for a taste of jungle shipyard life!

    SailCargo Inc. is a young organization in Costa Rica who have a vision of building a sustainable shipping industry. They have built a community focused shipyard and are now embarking on a grand project to build a fleet of sustainable sailing cargo vessels for commercial shipping.

    Their first ship will be called Ceiba, in honor of the Maya Tree of Life, (aka the Ceiba Tree or Silk Cotton Tree) which also happens to be one of my favorite trees.

    Alexandria Shaner (1986, USA) has lived most of her life in the Caribbean, as well as in Egypt and Nicaragua. A sailor, writer, organizer, and street medic, she has been involved in community organizing, media and education, and environmental activism for over 20 years.
